SASSA checks every SRD applicant against the Home Affairs population register. If your details don't match, your application or a month can be declined with "identity verification failed". This guide explains why and how to fix it.
Why identity verification fails
- Spelling differences in your name or surname (including a changed surname after marriage)
- A wrong digit in your ID number
- Your ID isn't on the Home Affairs database, or is marked as duplicate or deceased
- For permit and asylum holders: an expired or unrecognised permit number
- Using a phone number that's registered to someone else
How to fix it
- Check your application details against your green ID book or smart ID card.
- If your details were wrong, correct them on srd.sassa.gov.za if the option is offered, or contact SASSA on 0800 60 10 11.
- If Home Affairs records are wrong, visit Home Affairs with your ID and proof (marriage certificate, etc.) to fix them.
- Appeal declined months within 90 days: SRD appeal guide.
- If SASSA asks for extra verification (for example by SMS link), complete it only on a .gov.za site.
Phone number and identity
If you've lost your SIM, update your number through the official process, which includes identity checks: change your SASSA phone number.
Frequently asked questions
Why does SASSA say my ID is not verified when it's valid?
Usually a mismatch in name spelling or a Home Affairs record problem. Check both.
Can a SASSA office verify my identity?
Offices can help with some problems. Take your ID and any supporting documents. See SASSA offices.
