Make sure you qualify first: SRD eligibility rules.
Step by step: apply on srd.sassa.gov.za
- Go to srd.sassa.gov.za. Check the web address ends in .gov.za.
- Choose the application option for South African ID holders (or the option for permit/asylum holders if that applies to you).
- Enter your cellphone number and tap to receive an SMS with a link or PIN.
- Complete the form: ID number, name and surname exactly as on your ID, address and other details.
- Accept the declarations and consent. SASSA uses this consent to check bank and other records each month.
- Choose how you want to be paid and enter banking details in your own name if you have an account.
- Submit and note the confirmation. Then check your SASSA status every few days.
After you apply
- Your first months will show pending while SASSA verifies you (what pending means).
- If identity checks fail, follow SRD identity verification.
- Once approved, a pay date appears next to each approved month (SRD payment dates).
Mistakes that delay applications
- Using a phone number that isn't yours or that you'll lose soon.
- Spelling your name differently from your ID.
- Applying more than once.
- Giving banking details of another person.
- Paying someone to "apply for you". Applying is free.
